A New Community Bus Starts Running

Starting this spring, a new bus began running in our town. Called the "community bus," anyone who lives in the town can use it cheaply.

Until now, people living in areas far from the town center had a hard time going shopping or to the hospital. Especially for elderly people who cannot drive, it had become a big problem.

The new bus goes around the main places in town once an hour. The fare is one hundred yen for adults, and free for children. The inside of the bus is wide, and it is built so that even wheelchairs can get on.

There is another reason the town started this bus. If the number of people using a car alone decreases, the amount of carbon dioxide produced by the whole town can be reduced.

An eighty-year-old woman who used the bus said with a smile, "Until now I had my daughter drive me, but from now on I can go out by myself. It really helps."

According to the town office, if more people use it, they would like to gradually add morning and evening services too, while listening to residents' opinions.
