When すみません isn't enough

    sumimasen

    すみません is your all-purpose excuse me, but sometimes you need more or less.

    Use when standard excuse me for asking questions, getting attention, light apology

    sumimasen.

    chotto sumimasen

    ちょっとすみません is softer, use it when you're interrupting someone or need a small favor.

    Use when softly getting someone's attention, passing through a crowd, small interruption

    chotto sumimasen.

    Sorry, just a moment... (softer)

    sumimasen.

    Plain すみません works but ちょっとすみません is softer when squeezing past or making a small request.

    anō

    あの〜 is the gentle conversation starter. Less formal than すみません, perfect for casual situations.

    Use when gently starting a question with a stranger in a casual setting, thinking pause

    anō, kore wa nan desu ka?

    Um, excuse me... (gentle)

    Textbook version (sounds stiff)

    すみません、これは何ですか?

    sumimasen, kore wa nan desu ka?

    すみません is fine but あの~ is gentler and more natural for casual questions.
