embedded question (who, what, when ... )

A question containing a question word like いつ, 誰, or どこ is embedded with か alone, not かどうか. The embedded clause takes the plain form. The main verb is typically 知る, 分かる, 教える, or 聞く.

Examples

• 会議かいぎがいつ始はじまるか知しっていますか。

  Kaigi ga itsu hajimaru ka shitte imasu ka.

  Do you know when the meeting starts?

• 駅えきまでどうやって行いくか教おしえてください。

  Eki made dou yatte iku ka oshiete kudasai.

  Please tell me how to get to the station.
