Japanese Compass is run by one person. The short version: you can use almost all of it without an account, an account stores your email address and your study progress and nothing else, there is no advertising and no tracking across other sites, and you can delete everything yourself at any time.
Using the site without an account
Learning content, the kanji map, grammar, vocabulary and the practice tools all work signed out. Your progress is then kept in your own browser or on your own phone and is never sent to us.
If you create an account
We store:
- Your email address. There is no password. Signing in sends a one-time code to that address, so the address is the account.
- Your study progress. Which items you have studied, their spaced-repetition schedule, your review history, and which days you studied.
- Your settings, such as your level and your saved words.
- Purchases, if you buy Pro: what you bought and when. Card details never reach us; see processors below.
Analytics
We count things like how many people started a level test and how many finished it. Those events carry a random identifier generated in your browser, the page path, and nothing else. There are no cookies for analytics, no third-party analytics service, no advertising identifiers, and we do not store your IP address alongside them. The random identifier is not linked to your account.
The mobile and TV apps
The Android and Google TV apps use the same account and the same study data as the website. They request one permission, internet access. They do not use location, contacts, the camera, the microphone or an advertising identifier, and they contain no third-party analytics or advertising SDK. Your sign-in token is stored encrypted on the device.
The AI conversation practice
If you use the conversation practice, what you type is sent to Anthropic to generate a reply, and a short summary of your practice is kept so the conversation can continue sensibly next time. Do not type anything into it you would not want stored. That summary is deleted with your account.
Who else processes your data
We use these services, and only these, to run the product:
| Service | What it handles |
|---|---|
| Cloudflare | Hosting, and the database your account and progress live in |
| Resend | Sending your sign-in code |
| Dodo Payments | Taking payment for Pro. Card details go to them, never to us |
| Anthropic | Generating replies in the conversation practice |
| DeepL, MyMemory | The translation tool, when you use it |
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with anyone for advertising.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account and everything attached to it yourself. It is immediate and it cannot be undone.
- On the website: your account page, then Delete account.
- In the Android app: Account, then Delete account.
This removes everything we hold: your email address, your progress, your review history, your settings and your conversation summary.
Copies kept on your own devices behave slightly differently, and the difference is worth stating plainly. The Android app also clears its local copy when you delete the account. Deleting from the website leaves the copy in that browser, because it is yours and it is what lets the site keep working signed out; clear your browser data for this site if you want it gone too.
Records we are required to keep for tax and accounting, such as an invoice for a purchase, are kept for as long as the law requires and are not used for anything else. Anonymous analytics counts are not linked to you and are not affected.
If you would rather we did it, email [email protected] from the address on the account.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email [email protected]. We answer from the same address.
Children
Japanese Compass is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect or who processes it, the date at the top changes too.
