the act of doing (nominalizer)

の turns a verb clause into a noun so it can take particles. With verbs of perception like 見える and 聞こえる, and with 好き, 上手, and 忘れる, の is preferred over こと. こと is preferred in formal definitions and with です.

• 私わたしは料理りょうりを作つくるのが好すきです。

  Watashi wa ryouri o tsukuru no ga suki desu.

  I like cooking.

• 田中たなかさんが駅えきで待まっているのが見みえます。

  Tanaka-san ga eki de matte iru no ga miemasu.

  I can see Tanaka-san waiting at the station.
