indirect passive (something bad happened to me)

Japanese uses the passive to show that an event negatively affected the speaker, even with intransitive verbs like 降る. The affected person is the subject and the unwanted doer or event takes に. English usually has no direct equivalent, so translate with the nuance of inconvenience.

Examples

• 電車でんしゃで足あしを踏ふまれました。

  Densha de ashi o fumaremashita.

  Someone stepped on my foot on the train.

• 雨あめに降ふられて、服ふくが濡ぬれました。

  Ame ni furarete, fuku ga nuremashita.

  I got rained on and my clothes got wet.
