The causative expresses making or allowing someone to act. Ru-verbs replace る with させる (食べさせる), u-verbs change the final sound to the a-row plus せる (読ませる), and する becomes させる. The person caused to act takes に with transitive verbs and を with intransitive verbs.
Examples
はにをさせました。 Haha wa kodomo ni yasai o tabesasemashita.
The mother made her child eat vegetables.
はにをせました。 Sensei wa gakusei ni sakubun o kakasemashita.
The teacher had the students write essays.
