too much, excessively

Verb stem or adjective stem plus すぎる means doing or being something to excess. 食べる becomes 食べすぎる and 高い becomes 高すぎる. The result conjugates as a ru-verb, so the past is すぎた and the noun form is すぎ (飲みすぎ).
