Noun plus のような modifies another noun by comparison, and のように modifies a verb or adjective. It states that something resembles or behaves like the noun. みたいな and みたいに are the casual equivalents.
Examples
はのにがです。 Kanojo wa kashu no you ni uta ga jouzu desu.
She sings well, like a singer.
のなはです。 Toukyou no you na ookii machi wa benri desu.
Big cities like Tokyo are convenient.
