X is Y (polite copula)

Attach desu to a noun or adjective to make a polite statement, like the English verb to be. It does not change for person or number. The basic sentence shape is [topic] wa [noun] desu.

Examples

• 私わたしは学生がくせいです。

  Watashi wa gakusei desu.

  I am a student.

• これは本ほんです。

  Kore wa hon desu.

  This is a book.
