is not (polite negative of です)

Replace desu with ja arimasen to say that something is not the case. Ja arimasen is the everyday spoken form; dewa arimasen is the slightly more formal version. It attaches to nouns and na-adjectives.

Examples

• 私わたしは先生せんせいじゃありません。

  Watashi wa sensei ja arimasen.

  I am not a teacher.

• それは水みずじゃありません。

  Sore wa mizu ja arimasen.

  That is not water.
