question marker

Add ka to the end of a polite sentence to turn it into a question. Word order does not change, and in polite writing the question mark is optional. Rising intonation goes on the final ka in speech.

• これはあなたのかばんですか。

  Kore wa anata no kaban desu ka.

  Is this your bag?

• 田中たなかさんは学生がくせいですか。

  Tanaka san wa gakusei desu ka.

  Is Tanaka a student?
