not very, not much

Amari with a negative predicate means not very or not often. It works with both adjectives and verbs: amari takakunai (not very expensive), amari mimasen (do not watch much). The predicate must be negative.

Examples

• 私わたしはあまりテレビを見みません。

  Watashi wa amari terebi o mimasen.

  I don't watch TV very much.

• この店みせはあまり高たかくないです。

  Kono mise wa amari takakunai desu.

  This shop is not very expensive.
