na-adjectives: past and negative past

Na-adjectives form the past with deshita and the negative past with ja arimasen deshita, exactly like nouns. The adjective itself does not change. Compare i-adjectives, which conjugate internally instead.

Examples

• 昨日きのうは暇ひまでした。

  Kinou wa hima deshita.

  I was free yesterday.

• 祭まつりはにぎやかじゃありませんでした。

  Matsuri wa nigiyaka ja arimasen deshita.

  The festival was not lively.
